JAKARTA (JP): A Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737-400 jetliner, which served Jakarta-Yogyakarta route, was burned Wednesday at 7:14 a.m. after making a hard landing in Adi Sucipto Airport, Yogyakarta. Metro TV station quoted Minister of Transportation that 76 passengers had been evacuated, but it was not clear yet whether there were alive or dead. They were admitted to Harjo Lukito Hospital, Yogyakarta. The fate of the remaining 57 passengers was unknown, the TV station said. |

JAKARTA (Antara): The Health Ministry has warned the public of more dengue fever outbreaks occurringin the wake of floods that swept through several parts of the country recently."The Health Ministry foresees an increase in the number of dengue fever patients in the wake of the floods," the ministry's director general of communicable diseases I Nyoman Kandun said onthe sidelines of a WHO meeting on minimizing tropical diseases Wednesday. |

Director General for Tourism Marketing and Promotion, Thamrin B. Bachri recently disclosed that Parliament had agreed to allocate a budget of Rp. 158 billion for international tourism marketing 2007 spending, of which Rp. 20 billion is earmarked to promote five priority destinations for 2007, reports Erwin Nurdin for Bisnis Indonesia. The five priority regions are West Sumatra, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, West Nusatenggara and East Nusatenggara, that support the promotion of Bali and Yogyakarta. |

After weeks of sweltering heat in Jakarta, where the air-conditioning seemed just not to work at all, suddenly on Thursday, 2 February the skies opened up over the capital and torrential rains fell unrelentingly until the following Friday morning. Thursday evening, office workers found themselves wading through waist-deep water to reach home, while others were stuck in paralyzed traffic for hours until the early morning. But, the weathermen told Jakarta citizens that this was only the beginning, since these were only local rains. Rains had not yet fallen in the mountains that feed the 13 rivers that cross Jakarta on their way to the Java sea forming the estuaries of north Jakarta. |

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono remains extremely popular and if an election were held today he would win by a virtual landslide, according to a new poll released on Thursday (28/12/06). This was reported by Indonesia’s Trade and Investment News released by the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy. The Jakarta-based Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) found in its latest poll that the approval rating for Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had reached 67%, more than the 61% of the popular vote he and running mate Jusuf Kalla garnered in the 2004 presidential election. |

 In his end of the year report, Culture and Tourism Minister, Jero Wacik conceded that 2006 tourism targets had not been achieved, reported Bisnis Indonesia. Although December arrival statistics had not been received from the National Statistics Board, Minister Jero Wacik estimated that total 2006 arrivals will again decline by 4.11% compared to 2005, to reach around 4.8 million, an almost 10% shortfall from the earlier anticipated target of 5.25 million visitors.
