JAKARTA (JP): Garuda Indonesia jetliner carrying 140people burst into flames as it landed at Adi Sutjipto airport in Yogyakarta early Wednesday, killing at least 22 people and wounding score others, officials said. MetroTV television reported that many bodies had not been evacuated from the burned plane. The Boeing 737-400 was carrying 10 Australians, including journalists and diplomatic staff, when it overshot the runway of Yogyakarta airport and caught fire. Prime Minister John Howard said up to 10 Australians were aboard the Boeing 737-400 that overshot the runway in Yogyakarta then burst into flames.
Officials said the Australians included diplomatic staff and journalists connected to a visit to Indonesia by Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer, who was not aboard the flight. "There appears to have been a significant loss of life," Howard was quoted by AP news agency as saying. "There were up to 10 Australians on board and not all of those have been accounted for." The ill-fated airplane served Jakarta-Yogyakarta route. |
